Established as the first and largest green energy fair in Croatia and the wider region, GEF delivered extensive national and regional media visibility and became a key meeting point for the renewable energy ecosystem, renewable energy sources, battery storage, e-mobility, sustainable finance, ESG, and long-term regional energy transition strategies, setting the stage for an even more ambitious Green Energy Fair 2026.

A secure energy supply at a competitive price is now as important to industrial competitiveness as expertise, technology and access to markets. The panel brings together four perspectives: an exporter experiencing record growth thanks to global demand for power equipment; an energy company investing in domestic gas production and renewables; the cement industry facing major decarbonisation challenges; and a chamber of commerce representing businesses for which energy costs have become a key risk.

As the energy transition progresses and demand grows for stable, secure, low-carbon electricity, a key question is how to reconcile the development of nuclear energy with the rapid expansion of renewable sources.

This presentation will explore how the two can complement each other, the role of nuclear energy in maintaining power-system stability, and the challenges of integrating an increasing share of variable renewable generation. Special attention will be paid to the technological, economic and system-level aspects of their joint development and their role in a reliable, sustainable and competitive future energy mix.

The Promina solar power plant represents a milestone for Croatia’s energy sector. With a planned grid connection capacity of 150 MW and annual generation of approximately 274 GWh, it is Croatia’s largest solar project and could meet the annual electricity needs of around 69,000 households.

The project also involves a new 400 kV substation, the first of its kind in Croatia since 2004 and the first in Dalmatia in more than 45 years. The €15.3 million investment will connect the plant to Croatia’s transmission grid through 400 kV lines towards the Konjsko and Velebit substations.

Using this case study, the panel will examine the technical, investment and regulatory challenges of delivering one of Croatia’s largest energy projects, focusing on transmission infrastructure, connecting large renewable installations and the strategic importance of the 400 kV grid.

For years, battery storage was considered the missing link. As more batteries enter the system, they are increasingly seen as tools for integrating renewables, easing grid congestion and improving the efficiency and economics of power-system development.

However, strong demand for renewable grid connections, the electrification of consumption and rapidly rising electricity demand from data centres are turning battery storage into critical strategic infrastructure for the energy transition.

Whether batteries can provide all the flexibility the electricity system requires will depend on decisions made today. Policymakers, regulators and market participants will play a crucial role in creating conditions for their further development.

Mislav Crnogorac

Mislav Crnogorac is an experienced data center executive, Founder and Director of Parsec Lab d.o.o., and Chief Engineer and AI Solutions Architect at Pantheon AI, with an international career at Emerson, Vertiv and Amazon Web Services; he has designed more than 50 data centers worldwide, served as Director of Data Center Engineering at AWS from 2020 to 2024, leading over 300 engineers and innovation programs worth approximately USD 7 billion, and holds a degree in Computer Science from FER in Zagreb.

Luka Majić

Luka Majić is an electrical engineer with over a decade of experience in the data center industry and Product Manager for Advanced Power at Vertiv Infrastructure Solutions, specializing in battery storage, power conversion systems, microgrids and integrated power and cooling solutions, with expertise in technical design, feasibility studies and carbon impact assessments to develop resilient, cost-effective and sustainable infrastructure.

Igor Šumonja

Igor Šumonja is an electrical engineering graduate and Head of Grid Connections at the Croatian Transmission System Operator (HOPS), where he has worked since 2008 on integrating renewable energy sources and large industrial consumers into the transmission network; he is an established expert in power sector regulation and has authored or contributed to key grid connection regulations, transmission system rules and connection fee methodologies.

Luka Pehar

Luka Pehar holds a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Zagreb’s Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing and an MBA in energy economics; since 2011, he has worked at HROTE as Director of the Electricity Market Division, overseeing market processes, imbalance settlement, market rules, trading on CROPEX and renewable energy generation planning, and leading the implementation of 15-minute imbalance settlement and the development of IT systems for electricity market monitoring.

Davor Bošnjak

Davor Bošnjak is Director of Short-Term Portfolio Management at HEP Trgovina d.o.o., with over 20 years of experience in electricity trading, energy portfolio optimization, consumption forecasting and power system balancing; he holds a degree in electrical engineering and an MBA, and actively contributes to international expert working groups and the development of European electricity market regulations, including the application of algorithmic trading and blockchain technology.

Dario Antolović

Dario Antolović is Director of Energy Solutions Development at ENNA Next, where he leads the development of virtual power plants, ancillary services and battery energy storage systems; he holds a master’s degree in electrical engineering and information technology from the University of Zagreb’s Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing and previously spent over ten years at Rimac Automobili and Bugatti Rimac developing powertrain and embedded systems, now focusing on solutions that enhance flexibility and enable more efficient participation in electricity markets.

Tin Bobetko

Tin Bobetko is CEO of Uprise d.o.o., with extensive experience in power systems, regional coordination and international energy projects gained at HEP, HOPS, ENTSO-E and TSCNET Services; he now leads the development of software and optimization solutions for power systems, renewable energy, battery storage and electricity markets, with Uprise receiving the 2026 Hrvoje Požar Foundation Award for Energy Innovation for its STORM system, designed to optimize energy portfolios and manage battery storage.

Ivan Grakalić

An automation specialist who graduated from the Faculty of Engineering in Rijeka in 2006, he has led the Integrated Energy Solutions Department at 2B automation since 2024, where he and his team developed a proprietary energy management system (EMS) integrated with a trading and aggregation platform, managing devices with a total power of 2.7 MW and capacity of 2.6 MWh, with a particular focus on battery energy storage systems and flexible, vendor-agnostic integration of different technologies.

Tamara Hadjina

Dr. Tamara Hadjina is Director of Software Development and Research at KONČAR – Digital, with over 15 years of experience in automation, energy, industrial cybersecurity and R&D project management; she holds a PhD in automation from the University of Zagreb’s Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing and leads and contributes to national and European projects focused on energy, digitalization and critical infrastructure cybersecurity.

Tomislav Ščrbak

Tomislav Ščrbak is Commercial & Industrial Buildings (CIB) Channel Director for Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina at Schneider Electric, with over 20 years of experience in industrial automation, digital transformation, energy efficiency and energy management; he specializes in business development, building and industrial automation, and the implementation of sustainable and smart infrastructure solutions.

Zvonko Gabud

Zvonko Gabud is Director of Bus Procurement and Sales at Auto Hrvatska Group, with 25 years of experience in passenger transport, specializing in fleet modernization and public transport electrification, including the delivery of MAN electric buses to Croatian public transport operators.

Ivan Kos

An energy specialist who began his career at Schneider Electric after graduating in power engineering from the University of Zagreb’s Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, initially working as a technical support engineer for low-voltage equipment before moving into EcoXpert partner network development in building automation and energy, and subsequently focusing on electric vehicle charging technologies in line with evolving partner and customer needs.

Ivan Trapić

A mechanical engineer working as a senior technical specialist in ZET’s Technical Office for the maintenance of trams, buses, the cable car and the funicular, with experience in procuring new vehicles, spare and consumable parts in compliance with public procurement legislation, and addressing operational challenges in a large-scale public transport system.

Nebojša Dmitrović

An electrical engineer from Osijek who has worked at Osijek Public Transport since 2008 and currently heads tram and tram electrical system maintenance, with experience in planning and procuring electric buses and developing their charging infrastructure to support the electrification of urban public transport.

Marko Brkljačić

Marko Brkljačić is Chief Operating Officer of Bugatti Rimac, having previously held the same position at Rimac Technology, where he contributed to the development and industrialization of advanced automotive technologies; alongside his extensive management and technical experience, he is also a multiple drift racing champion.

Juraj Šebalj

Juraj Šebalj is one of Croatia’s best-known racing drivers, with nearly 30 years of experience, 11 Croatian rally championship titles and four Croatia Rally victories, as well as participation in the Dakar Rally; he is also an automotive commentator and content creator, offering a driver’s and enthusiast’s perspective on electrification, emerging technologies and the future of the automotive industry.

Anar Lachin oglu Imanov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Azerbaijan to Croatia since 18 October 2022, is an experienced diplomat who has held various positions at Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and served as ambassador to Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, with academic backgrounds in international law and law and fluency in Turkish, Russian and English.

William De Baets is a Belgian diplomat and former naval officer who served as Deputy Head of Cabinet and Diplomatic Advisor to the King of Belgium from 2020 to 2023, and held senior diplomatic and leadership positions in the United States, Ethiopia, Venezuela, Côte d’Ivoire and Belgium, with expertise in security, crisis management, telecommunications and information technology.

Mr. Wang Peng

Mr. Wang Peng is a Chinese diplomat serving as Minister Counsellor at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Croatia. He previously served as Chargé d’Affaires ad interim, representing the Embassy in diplomatic engagements with Croatian officials and participating in initiatives promoting China–Croatia relations, cultural exchange and economic cooperation.

José Ramón García-Hernández is a Spanish career diplomat, politician and academic who has served as Ambassador to Norway and Iceland, held senior diplomatic and government positions, and represented Spain in Parliament, with expertise in European security, international relations, geopolitics and public policy.

H.E. Javed Patel

Javed Patel is His Majesty’s Ambassador to Croatia, with extensive experience in diplomacy, national security and counterterrorism, having previously served as Deputy High Commissioner to Bangladesh, the UK’s Counter Terrorism and Extremism Coordinator for Europe, and Political Counsellor in Baghdad, alongside roles in the UK Home Office and Foreign Office.

Gordan Kolak

He gained professional experience in senior management positions at DOK-ING, King ICT, Megatrend, Megatrend Business Solutions and Dalekovod proizvodnja, before becoming President of the Management Board of KONČAR d.d. in 2020, where he led a comprehensive restructuring focused on renewable energy, digitalization and advanced technologies, resulting in record revenues, profits, profit margins and newly contracted business.

Zsuzsanna Ortutay

Zsuzsanna Ortutay became President of the Management Board of INA in June 2023, following senior management roles at MOL Group and Slovnaft; she began her career at MOL Group in 1998 and has extensive experience in finance, treasury, controlling, business services and corporate governance.

Marijan Vuko has been a member of the Management Board of CEMEX Croatia since 2010 and Director of Cement Operations, overseeing production at the Sv. Juraj and Sv. Karla Janeš Mesarić

Karla Janeš Mesarić is Managing Director of ENNA Charge and ENNA Power, part of the Energia Naturalis Group, where she oversees battery energy storage project development and the development and management of an electric vehicle charging network; she previously spent five years at Rimac Technology, contributing to the establishment of Rimac Energy, and began her career in research and development and quality control at Pliva after earning a master’s degree in chemistry from the Faculty of Science.

Tomislav Ivanetić

Alen Žarković

Alen Žarković is an electrical engineering and computer science graduate, co-founder and director of AleDo TECH, and co-founder of HOBACA, a technology company, with industry experience in developing solutions for solar power plants, battery energy storage systems, electric vehicle charging infrastructure and digital platforms for charging station management.

Tomislav Ivančić

Tomislav Ivančić is an experienced power engineering professional with 25 years of experience in engineering, construction and energy project management, specializing in solar and wind farm construction over the past five years, with projects totaling 262 MW of installed capacity; he is a co-founder of the Croatian Green Building Council and holds professional certifications in green building, energy auditing and energy management.

Željko Bago

Željko Bago izvršni je direktor divizije Prijenos i distribucija električne energije u KONČAR-u d.d., s dugogodišnjim iskustvom u razvoju, projektiranju i upravljanju proizvodnjom visokonaponskih sklopnih aparata i postrojenja; karijeru je započeo u KONČAR-u nakon diplome iz energetske tehnologije na FER-u, gdje je završio i poslijediplomski studij, a prethodno je bio predsjednik Uprave društva KONČAR – Aparati i postrojenja d.o.o.

Zlatko Zmijarević

Anton Marušić

Anton Marušić is an electrical engineering graduate and Director of the Zagreb Distribution Area at HEP, a position he has held since 2018, with extensive experience in electricity distribution, power system development and grid digitalization; he previously worked at HEP’s electricity distribution and gas supply companies and in its Strategy and Development Division, contributed to European grid automation projects, and lectured on technical and management subjects at VERN University.

dr. sc. Renata Rubeša

Renata Rubeša is a member of the Management Board of the Croatian Transmission System Operator (HOPS) and holds a PhD in electrical engineering, with over 20 years of experience in the power sector, including leadership of strategic projects in power system operation, digitalization, automation and cybersecurity; she chairs the CIGRÉ Croatia Study Committee B5 and represents HOPS on ENTSO-E’s Information and Communication Technologies Committee, and has authored or co-authored more than 40 scientific and professional papers.

Antonela Vidović Zubak

Antonela Vidović Zubak holds a master’s degree in electrical engineering and an MBA in energy economics and is Head of Contracting at KOER d.o.o., part of the Amelicor Group, where she focuses on business development and contracting projects involving battery energy storage systems, aggregation and ancillary services for the power system; she also serves as Office Manager at xEnergy, a network promoting women in the energy transition, with a particular focus on power system flexibility and sustainable energy business models.

Marko Kičin

Marko Kičin is an expert in battery technologies and energy systems with over eight years of experience at Rimac Group, where he led the development and integration of battery management systems (BMS) for projects including the Rimac Nevera, Bugatti Tourbillon and several Hyundai development programs; he now heads the battery storage division at AleDo TECH, focusing on battery energy storage systems, solar power plants and electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and is one of the main organizers of the Green Energy Fair in Zagreb.

Zdeslav Matić

Zdeslav Matić is an electrical engineering graduate and energy consultant with over 25 years of experience in renewable energy, battery energy storage systems (BESS), energy regulation and public policy; he currently leads business development at Storion Energy (CROSTORION) and owns the consultancy RENERGIS, having previously served as Assistant Minister for Energy and Mining, a member of HERA’s Governing Board and a board member at Solvis, while contributing to solar energy development and major energy projects.

Max Alway-Townsend

Max Alway-Townsend is co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of Neutron, a US-based distributed battery energy storage developer that helps businesses reduce energy costs through no-upfront-cost battery energy storage system (BESS) installations; prior to founding Neutron, he spent seven years working across software startups, electric vehicle charging and venture capital, and is based in New York City.
